Over the past few years, one of the themes I keep coming back to is cortisol. Not the hormone itself necessarily, but the stressed, wired state many of us end up in when cortisol levels remain elevated for too long. And that idea led to three separate sound experiments: Cortisol Cleanse, Cortisol Purge, and Cortisol Wash.
Each video approached the same concept from a slightly different angle. If stress can leave the body feeling stuck in a constant alert mode, then perhaps the right sound environment can help create the opposite condition. Slower breathing, steadier rhythms, and a calmer nervous system that makes deep sleep easier to reach.
Well, this video brings those three cortisol-focused soundscapes together.
What you are hearing is a layered blend of Cortisol Cleanse, Cortisol Purge, and Cortisol Wash, combined into a single extended sound environment. Each one was originally designed to support relaxation in its own way, and together they form the most complete version of the idea so far. Multiple frequency ranges, noise textures, and natural recordings working together to create a dense but steady field of sound that encourages the mind and body to power down for the night.
Cortisol Cleanse (https://youtu.be/bj9SNiZzHqk) formed the original foundation. It used slow theta-range tones and a 396 Hz drone generated from my MIDI keyboard to encourage deep relaxation, supported by flowing noise textures and grounding brown noise created from filtered fabric and rice recordings. Natural field recordings of waterfalls and gentle waves added movement and a sense of calm continuity.
Cortisol Purge (https://youtu.be/ylNfO6wRsUM) expanded on that structure. Alongside the tonal layers, deeper environmental recordings of flowing water and low rumbles were introduced to create a heavier, more immersive soundscape. The intention was a sound environment that feels like tension slowly draining away as the mind settles toward sleep.
Cortisol Wash (https://youtu.be/XTlHVC1WFTE) approached the same theme from a softer direction. Instead of building density, it focused on fluid, steady motion. Harmonic tones from a MIDI keyboard were blended with singing bowl harmonics, hydrophone water recordings, and subtle fabric-based noise textures to create a gentle sonic “wash” that remains unobtrusive during long listening sessions.
For this video I returned to the sound lab and layered the three environments together, carefully balancing frequencies and textures so they work as one continuous sound field. MIDI-generated tones, harmonic drones, water ambience, hydrophone recordings, rice shaker textures, and fabric-based noise all contribute to the final blend.
The intention of this one is simply to create a calm, steady sonic space that may help the nervous system relax, allowing the body to shift away from stress and toward deep, restorative sleep.
So sleep long. Sleep well. And wake up reset, my friends
