Official Description & Notes
Lysosomes is round dense membrane bound structure containing hydrolytic enzymes that many eukaryotic cell use to digest macro-molecules.
Hydrolytic enzymes and lysosomal membrane are made by ER and then transferred to golgi apparatus for further processing.
Lysosomes are chemically composed of proteins, lipids and enzymes (hydrolases). Lysosomal enzymes work best in acidic environment found in lysosomes. Lysosomes are also called suicide bags because they contain enzymes and if they rupture they can eat the cell.
1 Function of lysosomes is to carry out intracellular digestion.
2 Lysosomes also use their hydrolytic enzymes to recycles the cell's own organic material a process called autophagy ( self eating).
3 Lysosomes ruptured and released their enzymes in aged cells which are not functioning properly.
4 lysosomes also play important role in developmental processes like degeneration of tadpole.
If lysosomes not functioning properly a disease called Tay-Sachs disease can occur, in which accumulation of Lipids ( fats ) occur in the brain cell of human which lead to mental retardation.
